The biggest hurdle you have to get over is compatibility. Will your new CPU be compatible with your old motherboard, or will you have to upgrade? When it comes to CPU compatibility, there are 2 main points you have to consider, the socket your new CPU requires, and the motherboard chipset it needs to support its features.
The socket your CPU needs should be the first thing you scratch off your list. Sockets are proprietary to their respective manufacturer, so an AMD processor will not be compatible with a motherboard made for an Intel processor. Different sockets. Beyond that, there are numerous generations of each socket-type. A new processor running on the Intel LGA socket would not be compatible with a motherboard running the LGA socket, as an example.
If not… You have no option but to consider upgrading your motherboard , which might then require even more upgrades. Every socket generation has multiple chipsets associated with it. Each chipset supports a varied level of features starting from the most basic right up to the fully loaded.
They are a low end poor choice. There is a work around for ALL chipset dependent functions and you will find many of the possible upgrades like larger hard drive capacity, faster video all add value to your system. Even if you run out and buy a new computer you will end up spending extra to add these. If you do a lot of extreme online gaming you will see a difference. I want to upgrade my pc intel chipset g to 2 G ram. I bought ram ddr pc but the pc can not be run beeps is heard and system stopped with out any indication except the beeps.
Can you advice me? Some mother boards are ram sensitive it may require you to look up the specs for that board. I have to match ram on my board. I cant install a with a only a with a —— Sent from my Virgin Mobile. Can you give the memory back for refund?
I highly recommend that you give the memory back and buy a new machine they are so cheap today. The difference in speed and usability from the new machine vs an update to the antique g chipset which must be over ten years old now would be incredible. Matching ram to such an old board is quite a challenge, the ram may be defective also.
I would exchange and get a new machine, this is probably your best bet. Good Luck. I had the chipset on my first computer, an Emachine.
For me it was practice, I wanted to see if I could do it, and if the computer would perform better. I accomplished both. My recommendation would be to buy a newer machine. As stated, it was a project for me, I am a student in the field. You can get some decent machines now for bucks. What applications and other data are on the hard drive of the system you are trying to salvage. Is it 32 bit or 64bit cpu? Step 3. Then there are 2 options to update chipset drivers. Here you can select the Search automatically for updated driver software option, which can help you install the updated chipset drivers automatically.
Step 4. Windows will search for the updated chipset drivers automatically, and then you can follow the on-screen prompts to install the drivers on your computer.
