She deduces that this is no coincidence. Her being sent into the arena again is an attempt by the Capitol to destroy her and calm the rebelling districts. She admits there is no hope, and that this is how it is going to end. After her realization, she climbs out of the cellar and goes to Haymitch's. He is extremely drunk. Haymitch asks her if she came to ask for Peeta's life to be spared and for Haymitch be sent into the arena with her instead.
However, Katniss admits to herself that while Haymitch is awful, he is family. She tells him she came for a drink, and Haymitch passes a liquor bottle to her. He explains that Peeta came to Haymitch to beg for a chance to go back in the arena and to take his place should Haymitch's name be drawn at the reaping.
The two agree to work to keep Peeta alive since he and Haymitch worked to keep Katniss safe last time. Katniss leaves Haymitch's and returns home, where Gale embraces her and tells her it isn't too late to run. She tells him it is, and drunkenly falls asleep in his arms. She wakes up the next morning, extremely sick and hungover. Prim and her mother come to comfort her until she falls back to sleep.
She awakes and walks to Haymitch's house, where Peeta is dumping out his supply of alcohol. Peeta tells Haymitch and Katniss that drunkenness will no longer be tolerated. From now on, they will train and work as a team to prepare for the Quell. They will start acting like Careers, watching tapes of past victors, exercising, and eating a rich diet to grow strong.
They spend lots of time training and working to build up their strength. Just then Haymitch comes into the room, and Katniss feels a new sense of confidence knowing Haymitch was just as much a troublemaker for the Capitol as her.
Cinna has designed another wonderful dress for her to wear, the fabric of which glows to mimic an ember in a fire. Katniss heads to where the tributes are all gathered, and almost immediately Finnick Odair, the tribute from District 4, comes up to her.
Finnick is famous in Panem for being extraordinarily handsome and for having won the Games when he was just fourteen. He seems extremely arrogant as he makes small talk, and when Katniss asks how people pay for the pleasure of his company, he says with secrets. Katniss jokes that most people know her secrets before she does.
He agrees and walks off. After the ceremony, Katniss meets some of the other tributes. As Katniss and Peeta take the elevator back to their quarters, the female tribute from District 7, Johanna Mason, who is in the elevator with them, strips off her clothes and talks to them. After she exits, Peeta laughs that the other tributes, like Finnick and Chaff, are behaving the way they are because of Katniss.
In the dining room, the Avoxes who will tend to Katniss and Peeta until the Games start come in. One of them is Darius, the former Peacekeeper from District Her initial reaction is uncontrolled panic. The underlying cause of that anxiety, beyond just fear that she will die, is a feeling of having no control. She realizes that the Capitol can do almost anything it wants with her, which crushes her hopes. In the movies, she gets it from an old woman from the flea market, but in the books, it is given to her by the mayor's daughter and Katniss's best friend Madge Undersee.
Madge's aunt was Maysilee Donner, who was the tribute that Haymitch allied with in the 50th Hunger Games. Even though Haymitch was considered strong when he was younger, he valued his wit much more. Ultimately, it was really the reason why he won the Games. A little after he and Maysilee broke up the alliance in order not to kill each other, Haymitch discovered that when he threw rocks of a cliff, they would bounce back because of the force field.
While he was throwing the rocks, he heard Maysilee screaming and rushed to her side, but couldn't help her as she died after deadly candy pink birds sliced her throat with their beaks. Eventually, he was left with a female tribute from District 1 who hit him in his stomach with her ax. He then rushed to the side of the cliff while holding his intestines in. She threw her ax at him aiming for the head, but he dodged it and it flew into the force field that threw it back at the girl, killing her instantly.
One of the reasons why Haymitch has nightmares is because of his experience in the Hunger Games but another reason is that his family was murdered by the Capitol because of his disobedience. Two weeks after Haymitch was crowned the victor of the 50th Hunger Games, his loved ones, including his girlfriend, mother, and younger brother were all killed on the order of President Snow as a punishment for the stunt he pulled with the force field.
By the end of the second book, we realize that there is a rebellion against the rule of President Snow that has finally broken out, partially thanks to Katniss. However, she gets very angry at Haymitch for keeping it from her and abandoning Peeta in the arena. Ever since Peeta volunteered to replace him in the 75th Hunger Games, Haymitch had been helping the rebellion and working with Plutarch and other victors on it.
He encouraged Katniss and Peeta to befriend other victors who were meant to help them get out of the arena eventually. Afterward, we see him helping Katniss with the promo materials and he's by her side after she kills President Coin. Everybody knows that Haymitch was the only living victor from District 12 when Katniss and Peeta were picked. Nevertheless, not everyone knows that he is not the only victor District 12 has ever had even though it could have been true considering the reputation of the district.
Throughout the history of the Hunger Games, District 12 has had four victors in total including Haymitch, Katniss, Peeta, and an unnamed female winner mentioned in the books.
